When passions/obsessions or hobbies turn into meaningful employments

Claudia Junghans, 1^st president of the German CHARGE Group and mother of a 21 year-old son with CHARGE.

This presentation shows the transition process of at least three people with CHARGE syndrome from Germany. When did the transition process begin and when did it end? Not all of our kids leave school with a certificate. They can neither read nor write, nor can they handle numbers or money. They need a lot of support, interpreters and assistants. And yet it is still possible for these young adults to enter the regular job market.

The presentation shows how hobbies and passions/obsessions can be turned into meaningful employments. What does it take for parents to achieve this goal and what compromises have to be made? But first of all, how important it is to believe in the strengths and abilities of our kids.

The presentation is based on the personal experiences of Claudia Junghans with her son Jonas – 21 years old – as well as the experiences of other families that Claudia Junghans has accompanied, supported and advised over several years. As part of this presentation, interviews were held with the parents and their kids with CHARGE.

The presentation includes photos and videos. Even if support programs are different around the world, they are similar in one way or another. What is the same worldwide, however, are the questions and thoughts of the parents, as well as the challenges they face.

It should be noted that everyone is welcome to participate (e.g., fathers, mothers, professionals, researchers, others who are interested).

There will be two webinars on the same topic run in different time zones, so participants can choose the time zone from their region or the best time that suits their schedule.
